Homesteading and Sustainable Living
on Northern Vancouver Island
As a classroom teacher, I have always loved bringing my students out to the property to see where I live, what I do outside of school and why I'm passionate about what I do. The students always had fun, but they also said they liked the tacos that Bryce made for lunch the best!
I believe all children are curious and love exploring the world around them. I also think it is very unfortunate that a lot of children don't know where their food comes from, or they don't know what locally grown, organic vegetables taste like.
During the 2019-2020 school year, we had 12 different classes from three different school come and visit Connaty Farms. My original plan was for students to see what things looked like in September, when the garden is bountiful and the harvest is plentiful. So many carrots, beets and tomatoes! How much do you think the giant pumpkin weighs? Can you estimate how tall that giant sunflower is? Then I wanted the same students to come back in the spring and have a chance to plant their own pumpkins and sunflowers.
However, due to school cancellations and personal isolations, we will have to continue the spring farm tours virtually and hope for the best next fall. I also believe that we need to be learning a lot more from each other about food sustainability on Northern Vancouver Island.
